The Revealing Generosity of Urban Furniture
The Revealing Generosity of Urban Furniture is an article written specifically to accompany a special edition called ” Who Ever Said That Pleasure Wasn’t Functional?”
Designed by Marlon Ilg, this publication documents the work of Sebastian Marbacher, a young industrial designer/ street artist responsible for the many benches made out of construction planks scattered all over Zurich and Basel. The article describes the installation process, the origin of the idea, and what it signifies for urban space. Highlighting the importance of public furniture as catalyst of reflection on the state of the city and the brutal urban development that Swiss cities are currently undergoing, Charlotte Malterre-Barthes’s article underlines the importance of this context, along with the legacy of such a guerilla/DIY object.
